Premature ejaculation
Premature ejaculation is a male sexual dysfunction characterized by a short ejaculatory latency often less than 3 Minutes; an inability to delay ejaculation at penetration; and distress, frustration, interpersonal difficulty, and avoidance of sexual intimacy.
Premature ejaculation is quite common, affects many men at some point in their life with a global prevalence of 20-40%.
There are 2 types of premature ejaculation:-
- Primary/Life long premature ejaculation.
- Secondary that is Premature Ejaculation as a result of other causes for example Erectile Dysfunction.
The causes of PE can be classified into two types, psychological and biological. Psychological causes include:
- Depression and anxiety.
- Worrying about premature ejaculation.
- Early sexual experiences.
- Poor body image.
- Erectile dysfunction.
- Relationship problems.
Biological causes are:
- Hormonal imbalance.
- Prostate or urethra inflammation.
- Imbalance of certain brain neurotransmitters.
- Stress and relationship problems.
- Fertility problems.
- Psychological and behavioural interventions.
- Medical treatment with prescription drugs including SSRI’s, PDE-5 inhibitors, local anaesthetic creams, gels and sprays.
